The Japanese snack known as takoyaki is a ball-shaped food that is cooked in a unique molded pan using a batter composed of wheat flour. Typically, the fillings are minced or diced octopus (tako), tempura crumbs , pickled ginger , and green onion (negi). The balls are then brushed with takoyaki sauce , and finally topped with green onion and dried bonito shavings .

In the titles of other Japanese foods like okonomiyaki and ikayaki, the word “yaki” is derived from the verb “yaku,” which is one of the cooking techniques used in Japanese cuisine and means “to grill.”

Usually, it is consumed as a snack or in between meals, although in other places, it is served with rice as a side dish.
