Gilas Cadets Lost to UP Fighting Maroon

The gilas was ahead from the start of the game. They even have 14 or 16 points lead 2x maybe on 2nd or 3rd quarter. However as the 4th quarter enter, the game composure change.

Here are the reasons why the GILAS lost to UP

1. Gilas coach failed to adjust and encourage the team to stop the UP rally. When the score goes by 7 point lead,  the coach should call a series of time out and look for a players that can deliver.

2. The coach disrespect the capability of Manzo to score. He should send someone to guard him and stop him from further scoring. The coach of UP is good, he is able to adjust and stop Tolentino from further scoring beyond 3s.

3. Since Gomez is playing for UP, no legitimate ball handler for GILAS. I think Alejandro should not be in the GILAS. He can bring the ball down but he can’t setup good play, i believed he has low assists stats. I am not sure how consistent he is in 3s although he nailed one. Most of all, he spend huge time in the court with low score.

4. Paras can shoot 3s and he need the help of team mate to penetrate and use his jumping skills. He need screen and peak and roll game. The coach did not setup a peak and roll game for Paras and Tamayo. This duo is powerful.

5. When UP adjust and start to challenge the 3 point attempt made by GILAS, the scoring stop. Clearly the GILAS do not have  interior scoring capability right now.

6. When the UP challenge the GILAS is 3s area, the GIlas player can fake the shot and go strong to the rim. No one dare to try. It seems they dont want to get hurt.

7. Is is nice to see Go bringing the defense of the center away from the ring by trying to score in 3s. And he made a shot. He should practice more.

8. Gilas need the service of legitimate center and ball handler. AJ Edu and Kai Sotto are solutions. Sotto need to learn outside shooting. We know Edu can shoot outside.

The positive side.

1. Gilas is starting to gel. Some movement and passing are starting to appear.

2. Tamayo can dribble and drive strong to basket. He need to be coach on how to maximise his strong point.

3. Tolentino can shoot but he need to learn to shoot on when defense started to pick up his play.

4. Tuffin can dribble and shoot, he need to learn how to become point guard as Gomez set the game.

5. Gomez played for UP and score 20pts. He is going to be better than Castro. At sophomore, he played senior.

6. Rivero is very good in leaving his defender he should do more. Now his weakness is defense. He cant stop the UP ball handler.

7. Any GILAS player that can score can become target of opponent top defender like what Sakuragi do against opponents scorer. So all Gilas need to learn to create play in order to free their team mate.

The scores:

UP 78 — Ju. Gomez de Liaño 22, Manzo 22, Akhuetie 16, Ja. Gomez de Liaño 6, Vito 3, Lim 2, Murrell 2, Tungcab 2, Gozum 1, Dario 0, Jaboneta 0, Longa 0.

Gilas 72 — A. Tolentino 14, Go 12, R. Rivero 9, Paras 8, Tamayo 7, V. Tolentino 6, Tuffin 5, Mocon 4, P. Rivero 4, Alejandro 3, Ambohot 0.

While this players are tall, i cant see dunk on this game. Are players afraid to get hurt that they go hard to the ring?
